Parasites Are Living Inside YouMost of us don't consider the possibility that we may have parasites, because we associate them with tropical climates or underdeveloped countries. The scary reality is that there's a silent parasite epidemic that affects millions of Americans. Even the medical community is lacking sufficient knowledge and awareness to be able to effectively screen their patients for parasite infections. Some parasite experts believe that 85% of adult North Americans are infected with parasites. Hookworms thrive in warm, moist climates, such as the Southeastern United States. Just about every body of water in California's Sierra Nevada range is contaminated with giardia. In 1993 the water supply for Milwaukee was contaminated with cryptosoridium, causing illness in about 400,000 people and resulting in the death of about 100. Roundworm is the most common intestinal parasite in the world, infecting about 1 billion people. Do you have any signs of parasite infection?
How Do Parasites Get In Your Body?Parasite transmission can occur through contaminated food or water, sexual contact, inhaling contaminated dust or air, and skin penetration. Certain mosquitos, fleas, and flies also spread parasite infections. Several factors have increased the risk of more people acquiring parasite infections:
Kelley's Life-Changing Parasite ExperienceMy friend, Kelley, is a world class white water rafting guide. She has guided on rivers all over the world and was also the stunt double for Meryl Streep in the movie 'The River Wild'. Kelley was infected with the Schistosoma parasite while rafting the Blue Nile in Africa. The parasites laid eggs in her spinal cord, causing a condition known as transverse myelitis - which resulted in paralysis. Kelley is now in a wheelchair and is undergoing intense physical therapy while learning to walk again. Schistosoma larvae are released into the water by infected snails and can directly penetrate the skin of swimmers. They can also be ingested after encysting on fish, crustaceans, or edible vegetation. Watch this short video to meet Kelley and hear more of her story. How Do You Choose
